Why is 3G being shut down?

3G technology has served New Zealanders well since the early 2000s. But with the rise of 4G and 5G networks—offering faster speeds, better security, and more capacity—3G is now being retired. This move helps providers improve mobile coverage and free up valuable spectrum for modern networks.

Each provider will manage their own shutdown timeline, but the transition is happening nationwide. Learn more at the New Zealand Telecommunications Forum.

Will this affect you?

You may be affected if:

  • Your mobile phone only supports 3G.
  • Your SIM card is outdated or not 4G-capable.
  • You often see "3G" in the top corner of your phone screen, especially during calls.

How to check if your phone supports 4G

Text 3G to 550 from your mobile.

You’ll receive an automated reply confirming whether your device is 4G-capable.

This service is free from your PureLink Mobile number. (Some Android phones may display a message suggesting SMS charges may apply, but the message to 550 will still be free.)

If your handset is confirmed to be 3G-only, it may stop working for calls or data once the 3G network is shut down. We recommend upgrading to a 4G-capable device to ensure continued service.
