A Big Change is Underway

New Zealand is moving on from 3G. Over the next year and a half, 3G networks across the country will begin to shut down. This shift will help pave the way for faster, more efficient mobile and wireless services nationwide.
At PureLink, we’re here to guide our customers through this transition—especially those in rural areas who may be more affected by these changes.

Why Is 3G Going Away?
3G technology has been around for over 20 years. Today, it's being retired to free up valuable spectrum that can be used for 4G and 5G. These newer networks offer faster speeds, better coverage, and more reliable connections for homes, farms, and businesses alike. By moving on from 3G, New Zealand is preparing its mobile infrastructure for the future.

Will You Be Affected?
While many devices already use 4G or 5G, some older technology may rely solely on 3G. These devices may stop working once the network is turned off.
You may be affected if you’re using:

- Mobile phones without 4G calling (VoLTE)
- Medical or safety alarms
- Farm monitoring systems
- Vehicle tracking units
- Older wireless broadband equipment

What Should You Do?
1. Check Your Devices: If you’re not sure whether your phone or other equipment supports 4G or 5G, now is the time to check. Look for “VoLTE” support in settings, or contact your provider for confirmation.

2. Update Your Software:  Ensure your devices are running the latest software and that 4G calling is enabled.

3. Plan to Replace Older Devices:  Any equipment relying only on 3G will need to be upgraded. Talk to your device supplier or installer about compatible replacements.

4. Rural Customers, Talk to Us:  PureLink specialises in helping rural customers stay connected. If you’re concerned about 3G going away in your area, we can help you explore alternatives like WiFi calling, high-gain antennas, or satellite backup options.
